In 1954 S&W introduced a service version of their venerable N-Frame 357 Magnum and called it the "Highway Patrolman." When model numbers were assigned in 1957 this became the Model 28, while the more "deluxe" N-Frame 357 (the direct descendant of the original "Registered Magnum") was called the Model 27. Big and heavy, the Model 28 was at a distinct disadvantage when compared to the lighter Trooper 357 sold by Colt. So in 1955 S&W introduced their 357 Combat Magnum, a K-Frame chambered in 357, which became the legendary Model 19. Finally, S&W had a 357 that was lighter than Colt's Trooper. Nevertheless, there was still demand for the big Model 28 and the Highway Patrolman remained in production until 1986.
